Week Four-2.1

 Task 1: Literature review

From my previous research plans I have found out more methods into researching within secondary and primary recourses, such as when watching a documentary on the research methods of English artist Grayson Perry, it had shown me to go more in-depth with what I research and immerse myself with it and look from both sides of the perspective rather than just one. Within primary, experiment with the materials around you such as different effects you might want to create or certain shots that might need a specific angle and this is to make sure if it will work well with the theme and next shot that I would like. Another research way is to take photographs of what surrounds you so for me it could be people on technology or just the different variations and websites on it too.

Another one was through doing certain pieces of paperwork like a location recce to understand where all of the equipment will go and whether it will fit into the location as well as looking into techniques and type of equipment I can use to benefit me. With also going to exhibitions to help me understand and locations that reflect my theme I want to portray as well as influences the type of scenes I want to create when in production and the storyboard stages. Such as within this project I will be going to a science museum exhibition which is about the different robots and technology throughout the years.

What existing media products are similar to yours:

Within this secondary research, I will be researching  and analyzing the different short films that I believe are similar products to what I am going to create for my final major project. Each one is different in it own way but expresses the same meaning behind it through this i have commented on what i believe there aim was for there target audience.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRl8EIhrQjQ (Can We Auto-Correct Humanity?, 2014) the poetry short film can we auto correct humanity is different because it’s more dramatic and expresses from an Americans point of view and how it really does affect us but through visual effects and a poet rather than other various shots that the short film look up has by Gary Turk

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdpQir1sqiQ (Lam, 2010)

Microsoft Windows Phone 7- This is one which expresses how important it is to not miss out the moments and focus on them instead of on technology. It’s almost as if the other person on the other side of that phone is more important that the person or moment that is right in front of you.

Look up- Gary Turk – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7dLU6fk9QY

This is one of the most popular videos I have come a crossed so far and I understand why because it goes straight to the point, however, it is quite dramatic too. But it shows what can really happen, although in some circumstances it can be over used and over dramatic with the ending but in another way it shows what might happen if we surround ourselves with technology. This has influenced me through the type of short film I would want to create for my Final Major Project.

Overall, I believe that each short film I have found will impact how I will portray and produce my short film, I believe the one that will have the biggest influence is the short film  look up by filmmaker Gary Turk this is because  this is very dramatic and the way he uses film and sound is the similar way I want to show my short film in.

Films that are based on my idea:

For this, i have just researched and thought about each individual film I have watched just to see how much awareness does technology have in feature films and cinema screens.

Men Women & Children (Men, Women & Children, 2014) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DS7uc8OF6Rs (Men, Women & Children International TRAILER (2014) – Ansel Elgort, Jason Reitman Movie HD, 2014)

Nerve  (Nerve, 2016)- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PR9MOPTI7g (Nerve (2016 Movie) – Official Trailer – ‘Watcher or Player?’, 2016)

Disconnect  (Disconnect, 2012) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UI7Bhq2zDb8 (Disconnect-Trailer, 2013)

My view is that as I have watched each one this has become an influence to my idea as each storyline either shows the use of  technology or how addicted you can get such as the film Men, women & children (2014) this is a film that shows various different lives and the effects it can have from various perspectives.Another example is Nerve (2016) this is a recent film that shows how technology can overtake you as I know it is showing more extremes of it but it is still showing the reason why my idea has been created through the obsession each storyline provides.

Exhibitions based on how the world became obsessed with technology:

This is a list of exhibitions that I may visit so then I can look into it more personally rather than just online or in books.

https://www.dezeen.com/2016/04/03/aram-gallery-london-unread-messages-exhibition-digital-communication-addictions/ (Tucker, 2017)

http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/about-us/press/may-2016/rise-of-the-robots (Sciencemuseum.org.uk, 2017)

The reason why I have looked up exhibitions is so then I could personally connect with my idea and more of an understanding with see certain pieces of technology such as the robot exhibition in the London science museum this is because it will show me how technology has progressed and how it will be in the future.

This is an analyze and list of various influences whether that is conversations or Adverts that I have seen at various situations and times may have influenced this idea. This could also be tutorials that could give me the influence of using the two effects I will be using within my short film.

It’s almost as if the other person on the other side of that phone is more important that the person or moment that is right in front of you.The good thing is they found it humorous.

Look up- Gary Turk – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7dLU6fk9QY

This is one of the most honest videos that is about the obsession with technology

media – the doors we shut when we open our screens

all we care about is the best bits rather than showing the real emotion we hide our real selves on social media, do other stuff rather than being on your phone all of the time. We end up living like robots. and shows how much it really does set us apart.

(What you need to know about internet addiction | Dr. Kimberly Young | TEDxBuffalo, 2015)

Analyzing this video:

This is from TEDx talks which talk about what we need to know about the internet addiction when Dr. Kimberly Young analyzing this and how people gain addiction through getting addicted in a virtual world rather than from reality and creating a character in which you won’t or wish to be in the real world.

2-4 years old have more access to technology to so then you immerse them into it and it affects them to be more isolated. not letting them read or working as a team.

Case studies and Articles:

Michael Mcintyre – Shutting up kids with ipads

Even comedians now are beginning to joke about giving kids iPad or technology to distract them, too many people are relying on it so then it makes life easier for them but then they forget it isolates them from communication.

Planes, trains in the highstreet all you even see is technology and no communication other than what or who’s on the other side of the screen.

Overall, I think this research will be the biggest influence because each videos I have analyzed have made me understand other people’s experiences whether that’s them experiencing it or seeing it happen it was really interesting to look at each of them for me personally to become even more passionate about creating this film for the purpose of awareness more than anything.

All of these media products I have found all relate because they show their perspective on the world becoming obsessed with technology with each one being situated in a different country which is a relation to the short films I found on the platform YouTube and there were quite a lot of  poetry which made you want to watch more because of that in my opinion. My work is related to these media products because it reflects what I want to show and what I want the public and my target audience to understand as well as having the films reflecting on the reality of what happens and that’s exactly what I want to show but in an experimental short film rather than a feature film instead. This is the same as the exhibitions that I have researched I believe they both have a really strong connection with my idea as the exhibition at the moment in the London Science Museum is about how technology and robots have progressed and it reflects on the obsession as technology improves we become more addicted.

From these products I have found that they are relatable and they have influenced me towards my idea, i have create. I believe that through the directors within each product portrays what and how we really become addicted to be stuck in a virtual world that we call the internet. With the Film Look up talking about the moments that you will miss if you do continue to not manage your time with how long you are online for or just scroll through a social media account just because you’re bored. There need to be limitations and this is one of the major reasons why I came up with the idea. As well as always being interested in how society works and why we become so addicted to social media and almost become fewer humans than robots are beginning to become.

Research Design:

Within this I will be explaining the research design of my final major project, which will be presenting research questions, and what my aim is, how my research will fit in within the theme and research I will be doing for my project whether that secondary or primary resources.

Task 2: Research questions:

With this section, I have come up with various questions that is more like a to-do list to what will help my prepare for my pre-production and production process.

Primary –

  • * psychologist- talk to her and interview – Emma’s (Kirsty – Florence knighting Gale Hospital London) * http://www.nightingalehospital.co.uk/specialist/kirsty-bridge/
  • * Councillor – Vicky
  • * Ask people from my generation about how they feel about it
  • * Ask the public their view as well as recording some
  • * Testing some of the shots such as my intro
  • take photos of technology that surrounds me.
  • Take photos of people in general using technology
  • Go to the Science Museum  Robot exhibition and take images of various technology and people on it.
  • Interview Hannah from the umbrella center which is a mental health center which is based in Canterbury and she is the manager of this. and interview her to understand mental health and how it can affect you within the social media and technology.

    Secondary –

  • * Technology scientists if I can –
  • * Research similar short films to my idea
  • * Look at what type of equipment I want to use.
  • * What locations I want to use and use transport to my best ability
  • * People I want to use
  • * The permissions
  • * Paperwork
  • * Different sounds I can use for the ending
  • * Music if needed
  • * Any effects needed what they will be.
  • * Different pieces of technology
  • * How am I going to approach this subject?
  • * Colours
  • * Type of text I will be using
  • * What type of colors do I want to be shown through my edit
  • * Research articles about it
  • * Case studies
  • * Statistics
  • * Debates- on people getting obsessed with technology

Films that are based on this I am going to review one of them:

This is a list of the various feature films that have the same content and idea that i have come up with.

Men Women & Children (Men, Women & Children, 2014) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DS7uc8OF6Rs (Men, Women & Children International TRAILER (2014) – Ansel Elgort, Jason Reitman Movie HD, 2014)

Nerve  (Nerve, 2016)- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PR9MOPTI7g (Nerve (2016 Movie) – Official Trailer – ‘Watcher or Player?’, 2016)

Disconnect  (Disconnect, 2012) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UI7Bhq2zDb8 (Disconnect-Trailer, 2013)

This is a list of various exhibitions that surround where I live each of these would benefit me through understanding them from a personal perspective rather than just looking online.

Taking images of technology:

These are different pieces of technology i have seen before coming up with this idea.

Sperry Rand Rewind – Typewriter: Dorset Museum
London Underground to Hammersmith- Shows how unsociable we are as every single one of them is on a phone or using some kind of technology.
Underground to Hammersmith shows how we end up only connecting with the phone rather than the people around us.

The Interview With the manager of the umbrella center Hannah talking about mental health and how it can effect as within technology and social media. This interview was recorded with a zoom H2 microphone ( Audio Only)

This is the list of locations i have come up with and for me to search up more when going onto primary research.

London Science Museum: Robot exhibition

Canterbury college – Classroom: E104

Piccadilly line.

Dinning room – Home

Target Audience:

My Target audience are people who are interested in the world of society and how it physiologically has affected people as it can get addictive, the age group will be based on 16  to 25-year-olds as from my view I think that they are the age and generation who have been brought up on it most and the one that uses social media more as this is the type of platform I want to post my short experimental film on.

Target Audience Analysis:

This here is an anaylisis on my target audience would be on one of the platfroms i would be posting on, youtube.
