Week 3:Unit 2:w/c 3.10:Research plan: Sound Foley

During todays task, we looked at the research through Sound Foley whether that was how to be one or a famous Foley artist that may become an influence to the tasks I will complete during this week.

1. What are you finding out The first step is what my main subject is and what I am going to research.

The first step is what my main subject is and what I am going to research.

I’m going to research the different famous Foley artists and the process of creating that sound effect.

What is the process of creating sound for a film as a Foley artist –

 Questions:

  • The film each of the Foley artist has contributed to?
  • What made them famous?
  • What are the names of them?
  • what is the specific process of creating sound effects as a Foley artist?
  • Why do they create them?

2. How am I going to carry out my research –

Primary- I am going to analyze a few different films that the various Foley artist I have selected I am going to analyze a few different films that the various Foley artist I have selected have done.

Secondary –

  • Watch behind the scene of a film?
    an Interview with a Foley artist
  • Articles about the film they have helped with
  • How they produced the sounds – Articles/ Interviews with them/videos
  • Look at some of the book about Foley artists which may include various examples for them?
  • The process for creating the sounds – YouTube
  • Why does the process have to be in a specific order – YouTube

Famous Foley artists

Gary A. Hecker –

American Foley artist,Gary a. Hecker who is credited as  “one of the most accomplished foley artists in Hollywood”Who has contributed to over 200 films in foley, he began to be interested in foley whilst he was in high school,he has been nominated 20 times for the Golden Reel nomination too and has also been well-known for creating voices for the Character Godzilla in 1998.

– Films he contributed to and the process he usually goes through to create the sound effects.

  • Hunger Games (2012) – Foley Artist
  • A nightmare on elm street (2010) – Supervising foley artist
  • How the Grinch stole Christmas (2000) – Foley artist

Dennie Thorpe –

American foley artist Dennie Thorpe who has worked on too many award-winning films such as The Godfather:Part III (1990) , Forrest Gump (1994) and Jurassic park (1993)

The process of Producing Foley –

First of all, he starts off with the footsteps of the character and then adds on the sound of the  props whether that is the clanging of the horse stirrups or the noise of the hooves galloping. These are overlapped in layers to create the ambient for the scene.But the main concentration on the dialogue but foley is used to replace the lost footage or to make the scene seem more intense.

What is a Foley Artist – 

Foley  is used to replace the lost footage or to make the scene seem more intense and is created  physically instead of digitally like most sound effects can be created like.
